SAVING ENERGY
Every industry has an array of servers, usually stored in one area. Depending on its size and needs, its centrally located, with battery back-ups, very high tech, critical, expensive, and forever evolving. Technology has given IT Directors food for though when it comes to centralization or de-centralization.
Without stepping into the debate, we are all concerned about saving money. In these recessionary times, I think its more critical to search the talent pool for personnel who can bring more to the table than just the traditional one person - one job Joe. Why? Let me give you an example from my last job. My boss put an IT person in charge of facilities. He installed bulbs, replaced ballasts, plunged toilets and sinks, wired walls, replaced locks... I could go on and on and yes, he was a bit unusual. When the company hired a full time facility manager he didn't do anything but call electricians, roto-rooter, moving companies, locksmiths... and spent $80K more than the previous year besides his big salary. The Finance VP wondered why the expenses went up so drasically over the year with no major projects on the table? Not sure he ever figured it out. Now, I'm not saying that this should happen BUT if you can find the right people, with know-how, they will keep an eye on expenditures, can't be flim-flammed by alarm installers, plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, maintenance, if they have to be called... and yes - I'm available :)
